NFSC 360: Nutrition Through the Life Cycle

Skill Area: Community Nutrition

Assignment Title: Pregnancy Project

What I learned: In this assignment, I was responsible for finding a pregnant lady and asking her what she was eating during her pregnancy. I had to take this information and figure out if what she was eating was adequate for her needs. I then had to make adjustments where I felt fit to help better herself and her baby during her pregnancy.

Reflection to assignment: This assignment taught me a lot about the compassion aspect of nutrition. Pregnant women often crave certain foods and do not want certain foods and I learned how to be able to accommodate and work with them. The assignment was difficult because I could not just write out a diet for them. I had to take what they were eating already and make realistic modifications that I felt they would follow. This assignment made me realize that often times, it is not always black and white. Being able to adapt is a huge part of being a dietitian.

Relevance to the profession: As a dietitian, it is crucial to be able to sympathize with a patient and be able to understand and respect their views and beliefs. Being able to adjust a person’s diet is important as dietitian in any field.
